First Steps For Something Better

This house they watched us build

And they watched it cave in

They never told us what we couldn’t see

We were only playing with sticks and stones,

Waiting for the breeze to show us how to start again

And oh,

Did you think I wouldn’t?

Did you think I wouldn’t know how?

Oh, did you think I’d forgotten?

The first steps are the hardest, when you’re walking away.

Not looking back, not looking back, you fade away,

Your shadow on my shoulder, your lips on my brain,

But I know that I need to be, something better than we could ever be.

In the mirror I started drowning,

But you gave me so much more to see.

With these bruises, now that they’re healing,

I’ve got no reason to keep staring.

Did you think I would?

Did you think I’d know how?

Oh, did you think I’d forget?

The first steps are the hardest, when you’re walking away.

Not looking back, not looking back, you fade away,

Your shadow on my shoulder, your lips on my brain,

But I know that I need to be, something better than we could ever be.

First steps for something better,

Change the locks and melt the keys.

Keep the pace up like my chin and

I’ll forget what you meant to me,

Increase the distance and follow my feet,

Now I know that I need to be, something better than we.
